(COLOMBO The Island) A UN investigation team has obtained a comprehensive analysis of Sri Lanka’s accountability with regard to war crimes from the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR).
Among the high profile investigations undertaken by ECCHR is one on the conduct of the British army in Iraq as well as the accountability on the part of political leadership. The International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague recently reopened preliminary investigations into the liability of British military officials for the torture of detainees in Iraq.

(SAN FRANCISCO) My wife and I just returned from a week’s stay in Edinburgh, which was shortly after the Scottish independence vote. The Scots voted to stay with England 55 to 45 percent. There was no rioting in the street over the vote results.
The “no” campaign always led in the polls but the “yes” campaign was gaining ground. Then Prime Minister David Cameron, Ed Millbrand, and Nick Clegg, the leaders of the three major British parties, signed a pledge to devolve more powers to Scotland, if the Scots rejected independence. It is not clear how much this “pledge” effected the vote, but it might have stopped the growing support for the “yes” campaign.

(LONDON) Rana Alshami is from Gaza and has received an offer to study a Master’s degree in Law at a top UK University: the School of Oriental and Asian Studies (SOAS) in September 2015. Her neighbourhood of Khan Younis was directly struck during the current conflict in Gaza, and she has had to flee her home.
There is only one obstacle preventing her from fulfilling her university place; she does not have the financial means to cover the tuition fee (£16,425). Funding and bursaries are unfortunately scarce; hence she will also need an additional amount to cover her maintenance fees and travel costs (at least £7,088) which will be raised separately. (LONDON) The Tamil woman came to the UK in 2010, soon after the end of the country’s civil war, and says that she was repeatedly raped while held in detention by Sri Lankan soldiers before she left the country.
Despite serious concerns that she is at risk of rape at the hands of authorities if she is forcibly returned to Sri Lanka, because of her previous involvement in the LTTE rebel group and her previous abuse, her application for asylum has been turned down.
