Every worship day, I wore a proper suit and tie and clutched my white offering envelope in which a single Canadian dollar would help fill the coffers of what the United Church still calls its “Mission and Service Fund”. But Vicky Sepass wore a shabby grey uniform and had nothing to put in the plate on Sundays, for she herself was the offering.

“White vanning” is a historic practice of the Sri Lanka government. Political opponents disappear after white vans are seen, the same vans often are used to deposit decapitated bodies generally near the homes of the victims.

These vehicles have obtained a notoriety that peaked during the last years of the war with the LTTE. The circumstances under which this particular white van came to light had all the classic features that made the white van an object of fear and intimidation during the previous decade. It had false number plates. It had army personnel in it. It was being driven in a manner that caused the policemen on duty to decide to stop it, and the occupants had behaved in a sufficiently suspicious manner to prompt the police to thereafter search the vehicle. This led them to find a pistol that belonged to none of the occupants of the van.

(DAYTONA BEACH) On December 19, 1761, author and publicist Peter Annett was arrested on a charge of blasphemy and sedition for questioning scripture and the authority of the Church through nine editions of his news sheet The Free Enquirer (Oct. 17 – Dec. 12, 1761). He was prosecuted in London by the Attorney General and sentenced by the Court of King’s Bench to imprisonment at hard labor in Newgate prison, and ordered to stand twice in the pillory, once at the Royal Exchange and once at Charing Cross, despite his advanced age.

(Tamil Guardian) Sri Lanka’s government has rejected a recent report by the Oakland Institute, which said a “silent war” through the military occupation of Tamil land in Sri Lanka continues to seek “Sinhalese domination in former Tamil homelands”.
Deputy foreign affairs minister Ajith Perera said to media the government “strongly rejects” the report published last week.

(TamilNet) A tense situation prevailed as Sinhala settlers confronted the Tamil landowners. However, the move to survey the lands that belong to Eezham Tamils was halted after Northern Provincial Council (NPC) member Thurairajah Ravikaran documented the land deeds to survey department officers who were brought by the so-called National Housing Development Authority to seize the lands to Sinhala colonisers in the country of Eezham Tamils. The SL State is accelerating Sinhala colonization with the aim of permanently wedging the demographic contiguity of the northern and eastern provinces
The Sri Lankan State-sponsored Sinhala colonisation has been taking place from the times of former SL presidents J.R. Jeyawardene and R. Premadasa, the father of Sajith Premadasa.
The Tamil landowners, chased away from their villages in 1980 are in possession of documents of ownership. A lot of their lands have already been encroached by the Sinhala settlers with the backing of the occupying SL military.
NPC councillor Ravikaran blamed that the Divisional Secretary of Karai-thu’raip-pattu for backing the survey department officials who attempted to survey the lands.
The Tamil landowners had alerted the NPC councillor as soon as they spotted the presence of the surveying department officials in their lands.
